May is National Water Safety Month

May is National Water Safety Month and Miami-Dade Parks is committed to providing the community with proven safety measures to reduce, prevent, and ultimately eliminate water-related injuries and fatalities. Drowning is preventable, and we encourage everyone to engage in conversations with loved ones and neighbors about the importance of water safety. By sharing this knowledge, we can make a significant impact in preventing potentially dangerous situations.

Learn2Swim
Miami-Dade Parks’ Aquatics Division has worked tirelessly to offer swimming lessons for individuals ages 2 and up. These lessons help children gain comfort in the water, provide parents with essential tips for safely introducing their children to water, and teach life-saving skills such as breath control, stroke mechanics, and water safety practices. Enrolling in a Learn2Swim class at one of our county pool locations is a simple step towards making you or your child safer at the beach or pool.

Safety in the Sand
In addition to water safety, Miami-Dade Parks is promoting the Safety in the Sand campaign, a countywide initiative aimed at raising awareness about sand-related accidents at Miami-Dade County beaches. The campaign focuses on preventing the risks associated with sand digging and other beach activities, creating a safer environment for all beachgoers.

Summer Safety Splash
To further highlight the importance of water safety, Miami-Dade Parks will host the 16th Annual Summer Safety Splash during National Water Safety Month. This free event will feature swimming lesson demonstrations, interactive water safety activities, and expert insights from community leaders.

  • Saturday, May 16
    10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    AD Barnes Pool
    3401 SW 72 Avenue
    Miami, FL 33155

This is our largest drowning prevention event of the year, in partnership with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

World’s Largest Swimming Lesson
Taking place Thursday, June 25, the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is a global drowning prevention event to help communities build awareness about the importance of teaching children to swim and water safety. Miami-Dade Parks will have the following pool host sites:

  • Oak Grove
  • AD Barnes
  • West Perrine
  • South Dade

Throughout the day, Miami-Dade Park staff will keep track of the attendance of students in our Learn2Swim classes that attend and send the information to the World Water Park Association for submission into the Guinness World Records in hopes of breaking the world’s record of the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson.

Please note: This event is only open to children registered in Miami-Dade Parks’ Learn2Swim program.
