essential water safety tips to keep in mind all year round

Water safety is important all year round, not just during the summer months. Whether at a pool, beach, lake, or enjoying time around water at home, taking a moment to brush up on a few simple safety practices can help keep everyone safe.

Never leave children unsupervised in or around water. Drownings can happen quickly and silently, even in shallow water. Inexperienced swimmers should always wear a properly fitted life jacket, and flotation toys are no substitute for one.

At the beach, pay attention to posted signs and beach warning flags, and swim only where lifeguards are on duty. Never swim alone! If you’re caught in a rip current, don’t panic and don’t fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you break free, then make your way back to the beach. A little awareness goes a long way. The water should be something everyone enjoys with confidence, not fear, and a few smart habits can help keep it that way.
