Celebrate Women’s History Month
Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.”
In 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress designated March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.”
Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific accomplishments women have made over the course of American history in many fields.
- The Commission for Women and other elected officials will be recognized for their contribution to the community on March 15
- Enjoy free admission at the Pérez Art Museum Miami on the second Saturday of each month, featuring a free day of art activities inspired by the work of American-Dominican artist Joiri Minaya women in art
- Join the Miami-Dade Public Library System celebrating Women’s History Month with various programs, events, books and more, honoring inspiring women whose lasting legacies have shaped art, culture and science for generations
- Visit the Women’s Park, one of the first parks in the nation dedicated to women
- See the Julia Tuttle, “Mother of Miami’s” bronze statue in Bayfront Park, who founded a major U.S. city
- Be a part of the Commission for Women
